Baby Steps

Sarah did fairly well today, though she refused to poop. She did confidently pee on the toilet once today. It had been a little over half an hour since we had tried and she was dry. As I was finishing my task, I told her it was time to try again. She raced off to the toilet, put her seat on top, pulled out the stool, pulled down her undies and by the time I reached her, she was almost done! We did a big 'ol happy dance.

All other attempts missed today. One try was just a few minutes too early and the rest of them were a little too late. She spent the whole day in undies, though, and went to bed proud of her progress, though she did lament that she wanted to be a baby again. Growing up is hard work. She's doing a great job of it, one baby step at a time. (And I smiled with her through the whole day, despite my frustration. It seems I'm growing up a little, too)

Success!

Josie woke me up only once to go potty in the middle of the night and she went right back to sleep afterwards. Katie didn't get up at all in the night, but she was a little damp in the morning. Not bad for our first night, huh?

And this morning, Sarah saw her new undies and refused to wear a diaper. Hmmm. A day ahead of when I'd planned, but hey, when you've got a really motivated kid, schedules just have to go right out the window. She'd only been in undies for about a half an hour, we've been to the potty twice and she hasn't done anything yet. I have high hopes for her, though. She's been carefully watching everyone else in the house go potty, something she was only vaguely interested in before.

I was going to go buy my last diapers today, but I think I'll wait. Who knows . . . maybe I won't have to!

From Plan to Practice

We've taken a leap, this evening. Wearing night gowns and undies, Katie and Josie have gone to bed. This is their first night in undies and I expect to have to change some sheets tonight, but it is far past time for them to be completely out of diapers. They've been potty trained during the day since February. I expect that this should not take long for them to learn well.

Monday, because we will be home all day, will be our "Goodbye Diapers" day. I'm armed with a lot of undies for Sarah and will follow the advise I knew I was going to get from my last post. So if you don't hear from me on Monday and Tuesday, you'll know I'm in the bathroom! I plan on letting Sarah learn to go potty at night right away. I might change that for Monday depending on how she does during the day, but I have high hopes for my little 2 year old!

Oh, how lovely it will be, next time I'm out shopping, to pass right by the diapers!

They Did It!

My sweet little ones, after much discussion about it all day long and a little sadness at bed time, went to sleep without their bottles last night (even Sarah!). We snuggled and drank our milk from cups before bed and then I tucked them into their little beds. Josie asked about the bottles several times and, as I was leaving, she asked if she could have lovie instead. They haven't wanted to snuggle with their little animals for months. So, I dug out their lovies and they quietly went off to sleep.

Good job, big girls!

Amazing Progress

Today, the twins spent the entire day in undies. Real ones. Not those thick "training" underwear, that in my opinion don't really do anything anyway. They spent the morning practicing and peeing and learning good bathroom behaviors. (You can't unroll the toilet paper even though it does look so pretty all over the floor. It's not nice to pretend that you are still trying when your sister really has to go. You know, all the important little things.)

They have earned permission to go to the bathroom on their own as long as they tell me first (and they can't let Sarah play in the potty. Once is more than enough for this Mama).

This afternoon, we even went out for a quick errand at the local library and they didn't pee on all the books. We stopped in on Munga and Papa to share the good news and they successfully used the potty there and made it all the way back home again with dry pants!

Sarah is so jealous.

Little Things

My carpet is wet. Not all of it, mind you, but there are a great number of soggy patches scattered all about the living room and hallway. And, while I don't know about the rest of you, I really don't like walking around in wet socks. It bothers me a lot.

I'm not the least bit upset about my wet carpet, though. And do you know why? Because it's a sign of the mornings hard work.

My twins are finally taking to this whole potty training thing!!! I've had great success with Josie both last night and this morning and moderate success with Katie, who mostly likes to sit on the potty and wait until she's off of it to pee! A little frustrating, but I'm certain that with all the great progress Josie made today, Katie can't be far behind.

Josie actually told me she had to go potty today. We went to the bathroom and just a few minutes later she was peeing a little. Then she pooped and peed a lot!!!! We were very excited and, though I'm sure you don't really care about my children's bathroom habits, I just had to share the progress.

I've only used 4 diapers today. Two for Sarah and just two for the twins when they went to nap.

So lovely!!!

Fireworks

We almost didn't go to the local fireworks display last night. The kids had refused to nap earlier in the day and we were all still quite sick, some of us worse than others. Yet somehow, for some unknown reason, we still decided to go. So, after watching a little Lilo and Stitch, the twins current favorite movie, we packed everyone into the van and headed over to Grandma Russell's house. From there, after collecting Grandma & Grandpa, we walked over to the high school field.

When we arrived, there was lots of loud music and people dancing in the middle of the football field, so Sarah and Josie were immediately in heaven! Sarah is a very social little girl and loves big groups of people. Josie loves music and dancing. As soon as we laid out the blankets on the grass she started dancing and wiggling to the music! When it was time for the big show we each held a baby, covering their little ears. Sarah watched every moment. I'm not sure what Josie did, as she was with her daddy, but I know she saw at least some of it. Katie fell asleep. She saw the first little bit and was soon passed out in my arms! She didn't wake up until we had walked most of the way back to Grandma's house!

It was a lovely experience, I think, for all of them. I know Sarah certainly enjoyed her first fireworks and I think Katie and Josie will like it more next year.

Two a.m. Cutie

Sarah woke up last night at about a quarter to two in the morning. I brought her to bed with me and snuggled her up close as she nuzzled her head into my shoulder. She smelled so sweet, like Johnson & Johnson shampoo and pure baby. She began to squirm her legs a little, so I put my leg over hers. Her breathing became heavy and her body relaxed. I thought she was sleeping.

About a half an hour later, she turned her face up to mine and said "I'm stuck, Mommy!"

Yes, little dear. Go to sleep.

Spanglish

At lunch today, my little dears, Sarah included, began an odd sort of conversation.
"Gracias" one of them would say.
"Thank You" went another.

Back and forth and all around the table.

So naturally, I taught them "De Nada!"

Libraries

My town has the most pathetic little library I've ever seen. I tried going once with my twins, before I had Sarah, and we hardly fit! It's a small room in the basement of the town hall and you have to take an impossibly small elevator to get to it, and then you have to let your still-crawling twins play on the patch of dirty carpet between the bookcases.

Needless to say, it was an altogether uninspiring experience and we've never been back. Today, I'm going to take the babies to the library in my home town. It's big, beautiful, fairly new and well kept. And, they have a whole floor dedicated to children's literature! I expect we will be there for a while. And I hope I can convince them to allow us a library card!

I will be counting this as my children's first visit to the library, since I do not think you can really call the last place a library!

When did you learn that?!

While exploring the properties of magnets this morning, Josie tried to get hers to stick to the wooden kitchen cabinet door. Her remark: "Mommy, this not workin' so good . . ."

While I was going through the mail today, Katie watched, hoping for bits of junk mail, which I allow my children to play with and then throw away. I was looking at a postcard coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond when she exclaimed "20!" "When did you learn to recognize that number," I asked in surprise. "Two, zero. Twenty," she replied casually.

Last night, the children stayed up late because they wanted to see Daddy when he got home. After the fun reunion he had to leave again for an hour or so, and I went about the task of putting my cranky babies to sleep. Sarah came to me, whining and teary, with her play telephone, which looks remarkably like our real telephone. When I asked her what was wrong, my darling little one year old replied, clear as can be, "Momma . . . No Beckie!" and then broke into such pitiful tears.
**Note: Beckie is my sister. We talk with her almost every day.

Baby On A Mission

Sarah caught sight of her objective from across the room. She grinned at it and then, careful to keep it in her sights, she casually walked over to where I was sitting on the couch. Using her cutest smile (and believe me, it's really cute!) she requested that I pick her up.

Then she began her distraction techniques. She tipped her head back a little and leaned in for a couple of light kisses. She looked behind my head and gave a big grin. Then she came in for a really big smooch and, at the same time, she reached behind my head where the remote was resting on the top edge of the couch, giggling while she kissed me. She pulled back and looked at me with utter triumph beaming from her face. And then she gave me an evil laugh! Well, as evil a laugh as any baby can muster, which I have to say isn't really very evil at all.

Even more interesting: She didn't complain when I took it away from her. She was interested in the quest of getting it rather than the actual object!

Conversations

I knew it would happen. And I knew I would discover it this way, that it would happen gradually, and one day I would realize.

I've been having the greatest conversations with my kids. They are two, curious and intelligent. Their vocabularies are amazing and I'm not really sure exactly when it happened. But they understand the ebb and flow of conversations and they practice all day long with me, with each other and with anyone who happens to look their way.

I love being a mom!

The Itsy Bitsy Spider

They all know this song very well. They spent all afternoon and most of dinner singing it together. Right before bed tonight, I grabbed our little digital camera, which happens to take video, and shot this.

The lighting isn't the greatest, and the kids get stuck on 'itsy bitsy spider' a lot, but it's too cute to keep to myself!

Enjoy!

*** A few notes: Early on, Josie gets distracted by getting her fingers right, saying "put the pointer . . . on the thumb!" It's hard to understand her, so I figured I would translate!

She's One!

Yesterday, Sarah Rose officially turned One Year Old! I just can't believe it. I know everyone says that all the time, but the time really does just fly by.

She enjoyed her cake at her party this weekend very much!

Sad Sarah

Sarah is usually full of smiles and sunshine. There is very little that really bothers her enough to get her frowning. Today, Sarah is sad.

She doesn't feel good and needs a lot of huggin'. When I had to put her down long enough to make lunch for Katie and Josie, who actually have their appetite back from this same illness, she was very cross with me. So, like a good mommy, I snapped a few pictures:

Please don't worry. Right after the picture taking was done, I scooped her right back up and gave her lots of love and snuggles!

Party Plan

Mark your calendars!

Saturday, February 17th, (time to be announced, figure 2:00 ish) we will be hosting a 1st birthday party for little Sarah. Everyone is welcome, if you happen to be in the area!

Or, feel free to make a special trip! (Like 'Aunt' Niki!)

There will be lots of food and balloons and games, so be prepared to have some fun.

Little Momma

"Lay down, Fwawah," I overheard Katie say in her high, sweet voice. I was in the kitchen putting something away and I peaked my head around the doorway to see what Katie had in mind for her little sister. I saw Sarah, clothed only in a fresh diaper, dutifully sit down. Katie helped her by giving her a gentle nudge backwards. Without a complaint, Sarah laid all the way down. When her head bumped the floor, Katie asked, "Okay, honey?"

Assured that her sister was just fine, Katie went and got a wipe. She returned and patted Sarah on the thigh and undid both sides of her diaper. She pulled down the front and began wiping her up!

Though I was interested in seeing where this went from here, my instincts took over and I entered the living room, thanking my little Momma for helping change Sarah. With a promise that she could actually help me next time I changed her sister, she willingly relinquished the wipe and let me handle the re-diapering.

More Sarah News

Sarah can walk!

She started last Monday, out of the blue. She just suddenly decided that she could let go of the coffee table and walk the 6 or 7 steps to her momma!

I still have to coax her to do it, but she is pretty comfortable out there in the middle of the big floor!

No More . . .

Sarah doesn't breast feed any more.

She snuggles with me as she drifts off to sleep after her bath and a sizable helping of milk. When she wakes up in the middle of the night, it's a hug that she craves now. She has stopped pulling at my shirt, wondering why I'm hiding the goodies on her. She knows there are other yummy things to sustain her and she has moved on.

I have a little catching up to do . . .
