Sharing The Joy!

While there is nothing quite as delicious as enjoying the fruits of your own labor, there is also nothing that feels quite so good as sharing the joy. We've already shared quite a bit of what I put up yesterday and, after having a dessert tonight of fresh bread, honey butter and blueberry jam, I'm a little sad that we only have two dozen little jars left. I'll be making an extra batch of blueberry jam tomorrow simply so we can spread the love without feeling too deprived.

Who knows. Maybe some of it will find it's way to you!

Berries

Funny that we should be doing about the same thing at about the same time, hundreds of miles away from each other, but Jennie and I have been enjoying some similar pass times lately.

The most striking? We've both gone berry picking for blueberries, and we've both been canning! What fun.

This past week, the kids and I picked up Aunt Lois for a trip to a lovely farm where they grow acres and acres of delicious fruits and berries. We met Beckie with her children there and enjoyed a long, hot day in the sun, which had been hiding for several weeks. And we came home with BERRIES. Lots of berries. I'd show you pictures, but Beckie has them! *hint - hint*

It was a very enjoyable and memorable day spent with our dear Aunt Lois, who the children are sorely missing this week!

Photo Of The Day: At The Farm

There is a farm near us that we love to go to for fresh eggs. To make the 15 minute ride even more worth while, they have a lovely area for the children to enjoy some barnyard animals including chickens and turkeys, goats and sheep, and sometimes even baby pigs! They have this display in the center which they change every few months. It's a lovely place.

Kid Quote

Josie came to me this evening with a disgusted look on her face.

"Mommy, Katie bless-yood on me."

Smart Girl

While Sam drove us around yesterday, Katie was full of questions. One of which was regarding the pedals we use to operate our cars.

"Daddy," she said, "Do you have pedals in your car?"

"Yes!" he said, "I have three pedals and your Mommy has two pedals in her car."

She thought for a minute before she said, "Is the third pedal the fast pedal?"

Too Sweet

"Let's have a feast for Daddy today, Mommy. Outside!" This was the thought that filled Josie's head when she learned that her daddy wasn't home. He was out the door before the kids got up and he wouldn't be back until dinner time.

"Yeah!" chimed in Katie, catching the excitement of the plan from her sister. "Let's have a feast at the table outside!"

"A feast! A feast!" shouted Sarah, jumping around from room to room.

I laughed at their antics, but thought the idea deserved a bit of exploring. "So what would you like to eat at this feast for Daddy?"

"Hamburgers!" Cried Josie.

"And somethin' with dippin' sauce!" added Katie.

"A feast! A feast!" Sarah continued to yell from the other room, where she was still bouncing.

"How about potato salad?" I helpfully suggested.

"Nah, I don't need potato salad." (Josie likes to keep her meals simple).

"Coleslaw?"

"No thank you. I don't eat coleslaw." Katie was right. She never does.

"Beans? I know you all like beans and so does Daddy."

"Yeah!" they both shouted.

"And how about some French fries for dippin' in ketchup?" Katie said, just as Sarah came bounding by yelling "A feast! A feast!" Poor Sarah almost fell over trying to stop in time to add her hearty approval to Katie's suggestion.

"Oooh. And can we have deviled eggs?" Josie was starting to get the hang of this feast idea.

So tonight, for the best daddy in the whole world, we will throw a feast. We will show him our love by cooking and setting a fine table for the king of our castle, and he will love us right back by eating hamburgers, potato chips, French fries, baked beans and deviled eggs. We began the preparations this afternoon by baking a cake for him. And tonight, decorated with kid created adornments, our deck will be the envy of every other dad on our block!

Baby Steps

Sarah did fairly well today, though she refused to poop. She did confidently pee on the toilet once today. It had been a little over half an hour since we had tried and she was dry. As I was finishing my task, I told her it was time to try again. She raced off to the toilet, put her seat on top, pulled out the stool, pulled down her undies and by the time I reached her, she was almost done! We did a big 'ol happy dance.

All other attempts missed today. One try was just a few minutes too early and the rest of them were a little too late. She spent the whole day in undies, though, and went to bed proud of her progress, though she did lament that she wanted to be a baby again. Growing up is hard work. She's doing a great job of it, one baby step at a time. (And I smiled with her through the whole day, despite my frustration. It seems I'm growing up a little, too)

Success!

Josie woke me up only once to go potty in the middle of the night and she went right back to sleep afterwards. Katie didn't get up at all in the night, but she was a little damp in the morning. Not bad for our first night, huh?

And this morning, Sarah saw her new undies and refused to wear a diaper. Hmmm. A day ahead of when I'd planned, but hey, when you've got a really motivated kid, schedules just have to go right out the window. She'd only been in undies for about a half an hour, we've been to the potty twice and she hasn't done anything yet. I have high hopes for her, though. She's been carefully watching everyone else in the house go potty, something she was only vaguely interested in before.

I was going to go buy my last diapers today, but I think I'll wait. Who knows . . . maybe I won't have to!

Little Pig, Little Pig, Let Me In

By the time dinner is winding down, my three little actresses start to get theatrical. They love to sing a few songs, or put on a little play right there by their meals.

The other day, I was able to catch this little gem on video. Notice that Sarah just can't stop looking at the camera. What can she say? The camera loves her! And don't miss Katie's expert portrayal of a little pig. (Can you guess what character Sarah naturally chose?)

I'll show you another version tomorrow between Katie and Josie which is just as adorable.

What A Difference A Day Makes

24 little hours . . .

My goodness.

Yesterday, I was finalizing some plans I've had in the works for taking our company in a new direction. Well, actually, any direction would do since we've been sort of floundering along lately. I stayed up late finishing a few touches on a new web page that would be launched the next day. Exhausted, and not just a little worried, I fell asleep around 1:00 am.

I awoke this morning feeling oddly refreshed and with the certain feeling that today would be a great day. I wasn't sure in what way, just that it would be fantastic.

Sure enough, I managed to accomplish more household tasks than usual, including tackling the kid's toys! (Their room is the cleanest it's been in months. Maybe even in a year! Even better, they helped a lot.)

While my darling was out and about today, he picked up some asparagus for me. I couldn't believe it. Not only does he not like the taste of asparagus, he actually has a moral objection to the stuffs existence on the planet. I, however, love the stuff and I am, at this very moment, enjoying a plate full of it, topped with hollandaise sauce! Divine!

What's more, we have had more calls today for our company that we have had all month. We have sent out quotes and contracts galore and actually have a project starting tomorrow morning from contracts sent today. It's unheard of. And very welcome.

What a difference a day makes.

Too Cute To Keep To Myself

After a hard day of play at Grandma's house, Sarah falls asleep in the car. While her sisters climb out of the van and up the stairs in the house, I non-too-gently pull Sarah from her car seat. She moans a little, but snuggles her head into my neck and snores.

It's late enough in the day that I decide to put Sarah to bed, though her sisters won't join her for another hour. I lay her down in her crib and she quickly rolls to her side. She is still in her clothes, though, and in need of a new diaper to get her through the night, so I roll her on her back and begin to unbuckle her overalls. As I'm wondering why I had to choose overalls for her today, she opens her eyes a little and, though her eyes look vacant, she grins at me. As I wiggle the overalls past her cute little chubby thighs, she giggles.

I stare at her face, fearful that she will wake up. She has had just enough of a nap to ruin bed time if she should really wake up now. I pull the overalls completely off and she giggles some more. Her eyes are closed and she is still asleep.

As I pull off her diaper, her giggles turn to full belly laughs, though she isn't awake. I try to stifle my laughter but find it almost impossible as she impishly giggles and rolls away from me with her bottom still naked. I roll her back over and wiggle her diaper on, much to her sleepy delight. She laughs again when the blanket tickles her chin.

I'm left wanting to scoop her little cuteness right out of that crib to wake her up with hugs and kisses. I don't though. I leave the room with a smile, completely filled with joy, and go tickle her sisters to within an inch of their little lives.

Welcome Madelyn Grace!

She was born this morning.

She's 20 lbs and 8" long. Wait. No. She's a little over 8 lbs and she's 20" long. Yeah. That sounds better. And she was born sometime between 6:00 and 6:30.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but Madelyn's proud grandma woke me and rattled off all the numbers to my sleeping brain.

Most important, Beckie and her new baby girl are happy and healthy!

It's Time!

It's late, I know. And you probably won't read this until the morning. But Beckie is off to the hospital to have her baby!

I'll keep you posted and might even have some pictures for you tomorrow!

Woo HOO!!!

Li'l Sweetie

She leaned over to hug me, as is her habit at dinner time.
"Mommy, I'm going to be your best friend forever!" She snuggled her head into my arm.

"Katie, you sure do know how to melt a Mommy's heart, don't you," I said, hugging her back.

She sat up straight and put her hand on my chest. She wore such a sweet expression, concerned, but not worried. When she spoke again, she was very matter-of-fact and reassuring.

"Your heart isn't melted all the way, Mommy."

Yes it is, sweetie. Yes it is!

Sleepy Sweetie

Katie was coughing a few nights ago and when I went in to check on her she was sitting up in bed. This is usually a sure sign that she is about to get sick, so I scooped her up and brought her out of her room. Instead of needing to contain a mess, however, I found myself with a snuggly baby! I brought her to the living room, prepared to offer her a drink, but she refused. Instead, she said "I think I'm asleep, Mommy." Her eyes were closed and she buried her face in my neck. I told her she was probably right.

" I love you, Mommy"

"I love you too, sweetie." She gave a heavy sigh.

"Can you put me back in bed, Mommy?" So I did. I didn't want too. I would have happily sat up all night, enjoying the feel of her snuggled into my neck. It's rare that she and I get that opportunity.

Before the Sun

I'm never up before the sun. I love to sleep in each morning, lazily indulging the baby-of-the-family in me. I'm spoiled and I know it. It only hurts me, though, because I always feel so behind in my day.

This morning, however, I was up before the sun. It was dark out, the coffee had just finished brewing and all was quiet. I got dressed, took out the garbage, because I hadn't remembered it the night before, and stood in the kitchen, sipping my coffee, and watching the sun peek over a distant ridge. A big, beautiful, orange ball, it smiled at me, happy, I'm sure, that I was there to greet it. I was equally grateful for the peaceful moment to appreciate such a simple pleasure. And my day has been so much better for it!

Amazing Progress

Today, the twins spent the entire day in undies. Real ones. Not those thick "training" underwear, that in my opinion don't really do anything anyway. They spent the morning practicing and peeing and learning good bathroom behaviors. (You can't unroll the toilet paper even though it does look so pretty all over the floor. It's not nice to pretend that you are still trying when your sister really has to go. You know, all the important little things.)

They have earned permission to go to the bathroom on their own as long as they tell me first (and they can't let Sarah play in the potty. Once is more than enough for this Mama).

This afternoon, we even went out for a quick errand at the local library and they didn't pee on all the books. We stopped in on Munga and Papa to share the good news and they successfully used the potty there and made it all the way back home again with dry pants!

Sarah is so jealous.

Early Morning Love

It was only a matter of time, I suppose, before my twins discovered their new power. Nights in a toddler bed means there is a great deal more freedom than crib life offers. It has taken them weeks, maybe months even, to discover that it was possible to get out of bed in the middle of the night. So far, they have only used their powers for good!

The first time they ever got out of bed at night, they were having trouble falling asleep. They both came out at the same time about an hour after we had put them to bed, with big smiles on their faces. "We can't sleep, Mommy." Josie said. "And we didn't want to cry." Very kind of them to spare their already sleeping baby sister.

Last night, or should I say early this morning, I heard little feet enter my bedroom. I turned on my bedside lamp and saw Josie standing there staring at me. (This is a little disconcerting at 4:17 in the morning, especially when it doesn't happen often!) "What's the matter baby?" I asked, while pulling her a little closer. "I just needed some huggin'," she replied in her simple, sweet way, her little baby hand out to the side, emphasizing this fact. So I scooped her up into bed with me for a few minutes. Moments later, Katie was standing in the doorway. "I need huggins too, Mommy," she whispered loud enough for the neighbors to hear. So I scooped her up too. We snuggled in bed for a while, careful not to disturb Daddy, and finally, Josie said she was ready to go back to her own bigirl bed. I carefully and reluctantly brought them back to bed and tucked them in with extra kisses. They were both asleep again before I closed their door.

Life really is good!

Heaven

It's easy to stray. Life throws things at you and you make choices that lead you in directions you never dreamed. Old plans fall away to make room for new. But sometimes, the old plans simply leave you alone for a while, waiting for you to find them again.

A few days ago, I responded to an advertisement by a kind and generous woman who was giving away, among other things, a collection of classical music on record. I requested them, though I wasn't exactly sure why I was doing it. I don't really have a place to keep them and I don't own a record player. I replied just the same, not really expecting to hear back. Later that day, she called my house. Sam answered and she mentioned that she also had some books, if we were interested.

He wanted to look over her book collection, so Sam went to pick up the records that same evening. He inquired about the kinds of books she had and she explained that her uncle had passed away and most of his books were related to architecture, since he had been a draftsman all his life. Sam came home with a van full of books and records.

We stayed up past two in the morning pouring over these books, amazed at the history that was documented in the collection. (Sam didn't even bring all of it home. The woman kept about two thirds of it!) There is still a great deal more to go through, but there is so much information and inspiration stacked in the office downstairs. It's simply amazing.

At the time, I thought that fate must have pushed me to request the records so that Sam could find this treasure trove of books. Tonight, however, I know differently.

I am just now starting to go through these records. As I write this, I have looked at only 9 of the more than 300 titles waiting for me. I feel like a piece of me has been suddenly returned!

It would appear the the collection is alphabetized and I happened to pick a "C" stack. I am looking at a wonderful collection of works by Chopin and as I read each title I can hear the music in my mind and feel the magic of it working on me. Tomorrow I am picking up a record player from another kind woman who has additional records for me.

I'm reminded of all that I love about music. The passion and soul shaking emotion that fills me up and pours from my fingers. The window to another human soul that the master composers were able to force open, just a crack, to allow the eager listener a precious glimpse.

If only the babies weren't sleeping right now. I need to play!

Good Morning, Josie

They whispered as they came in, Katie directing Josie to my side of the bed and explaining that she would take the Daddy side. They had been up for about 20 minutes playing in their room and were now wide awake and ready for Mommy & Daddy to play with them.

Josie crept along my side until she reached my head. She stood on tip-toes and leaned in as far as she could, careful to stifle the giggles growing in her throat, and kissed me awake. I sleepily scooped her up into bed with me for a morning snuggle, much to her delight.

Seconds later (it could have been minutes, or hours. I don't know. I was still sleepy) I felt something soft hit my nose. Then I felt it again. And again. I waved my hand over my face, finding nothing there but the cobwebs of sleep, and decided I must have been dreaming.

Josie re-adjusted herself and then I felt that same soft thing on my nose. Again and again, like a felt mallet beating softly on a drum, over and over. Steady. Ceaseless. I finally roused myself enough to open my eyes more than a hairs width to see something pink and kind of fluffy come at me. I grabbed it instinctively, not really knowing what it was. I looked in my hand to find a little pink glove . . . with a rhythm stick in it. Josie likes to put these two items together to make a puppet.

It took me a while in my sleepy state to realize that Josie had been slowly and methodically beating me in the nose with her little mitten puppet. I looked over to see her grinning impishly. I grinned back, giving her a kiss and her puppet back.
