These are shakers, and they are really easy to make.
You'll need:
1 toilet paper tube per child (or cut up a paper towel tube)
Some bright paper
Dried beans
Assorted ribbons
Stapler (with staples, of course)
Wrap bright paper around cardboard tube, folding the ends of the paper inside the tube. Squeeze one end shut. Slide four or five colorful ribbons in the end and staple it shut. Pour some dried beans inside and then squeeze the other end shut at a ninety degree angle to the first end. Slide ribbons in and staple shut. Make sure each ribbon is caught by at least on end of a staple, or they will slip back out. And don't let your 1 year old chew on them. She'll chew a hole right through the side and spill all the beans out . . .
Special note: Due to the nature of these shakers, parents need not fear an incredible clatter from them. The sound is quite mellow. However, your children may be a little bit louder than usual while playing with them!
