That's How They Make It

"First," Katie said, her eyes wide and her face long with a serious sort of excitement, "they take ketchup and they mix it."

"Yeah," Josie chimed in, "and they add some juice to make it good and messy."

"Then they cook it!" Sarah added. It was as if they had rehearsed this. I raised my eyebrows, wondering what might come next. Katie supplied the answer.

"And out comes a tomato!"

I should tell you, lest you think my children completely idiotic, that we had just discussed several ways that grocery stores do not get their produce. They don't, for instance, have a greenhouse in the back room. And there is certainly not a garden behind the parking lot. So, rather than grow them, the children surmised that they must make tomatoes by some artificial means. Quite frankly, with the way they usually taste, I'm left wondering if the children aren't at least partially correct!

We'll be growing lots of tomatoes this year so I have no doubt that the children will learn, through their own hands-on experience, how a tomato grows. No ketchup required. (Though we just might make some!)

I can just hear them saying it! Don't you love the way they come up with solutions to problems?

I like the way they think the tomato is made!

Though I must say, I'm allergic to Jersey tomatoes (makes my mouth swell and itch), so imported ones taste yummy to me!

Gotta love the health issues (otherwise I'd be gone by now!)
