Shopping with twins

I think it happens less when you have one baby. One baby is a pretty common sight. They are adorable, of course, and draw their own amount of attention, but when people see two babies in the same stroller who look about the same size, they mostly can't help but stop and gawk. Most of the time I don't mind it. They are adorable, after all, and I love showing them off. But sometimes it gets to me when every three steps, just when I get my heavy stroller and cart both moving, someone else wants to stop and chat about them. And it's always the same questions: Twins? . . . a girl and a boy? . . . How old are they? . . . Were they born early? . . . How much did they weigh? . . . Did you have a c-section? . . .

And then all the comments come (from people who have never had twins, of course): Double trouble! . . . You've got your work cut out for you! . . . Just wait til they're two years old! . . .

I know people for the most part mean well, but it really does get on my nerves sometimes. How do they know if my kids are any trouble or not, and how do they know how I handle it . . . if I have difficulties or not . . . and why do they need to know the details of their delivery into this world?!

In case you couldn't tell, I went shopping this morning. I did get all that I needed, but it took me a really long time to do it because of all the conversations. Toward the end I started just smiling and walking away. Maybe people think I'm being rude, but there is only so much a person can handle in one morning!

Boy do I understand! They comment on babies, but also on large quantities! I don't often chat anymore, either. Just smile, say thanks and keep walking. Oh, and look very intently at your shopping list! :)

Or just say, "I'm sorry, I'd love to chat, but I have a lot of shopping to do. . . "
