Sam sleepily drove us the half hour from little Tabor City to the house at Myrtle Beach. He had missed sleep the previous two nights, because he was moved from Baton Rouge to Galveston and then he flew to Myrtle Beach. My guess is that, had we not had any car trouble, he would have napped while we finished our journey. Since that wasn't possible, my poor sweetie was exhausted. He napped on the couch before we all went out to have dinner with the rest of the family down there while I unpacked the van and got us settled in. The kids went exploring all over the house and deck, happy to be free of the car at last. They groaned when we went to put them back in the car to take the 2 minute drive to dinner!
The next two days were spent relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. Sunday on the beach was so fun for the kids, who enjoyed playing tag with the waves and digging big holes in the sand. We threw seashells back into the ocean, learning to skip the big flat ones, and we learned about the fun outdoor showers, which Sarah fell in love with.
Monday night, poor Josie spent emptying her little tummy. She caught a stomach bug somewhere, which quickly infected the rest of us. Josie felt better Tuesday, late morning, so we went out to Broadway at the Beach and spent hours just wandering through little shops and feeding the huge, grotesque fish in the water below the big boardwalks.
Tuesday night Josie got sick again and Wednesday evening brought illness to both Katie and Sarah in the evening. Sam and I started feeling sick too, but we felt the worst on Thursday and Friday, unable to leave the house. It turned out that we didn't miss much, because it rained on Thursday and Friday.
We were scheduled to leave on Saturday by 10:00 am, but the owner, Uncle Bob, told us to stay an extra day. So we did! It was our best day.
The whole family met at the beach and we spent hours out there finding fun things to do. We even had lunch in the sand, an interesting experience to say the least. Then we went and played in the kids pool, which was so nice. The pool is created in such a safe way and was so shallow that we could sit and watch as the children explored all the cool toys, like giant water cannons and pails that fill with water and dump on top of your head when you least expect it!
We left Sunday afternoon, amidst speculation that there would be no gas in North Carolina, expecting to reach Virginia, spend the night and then reach home sometime Monday afternoon or evening. We probably should have seen the trouble coming, but we headed out with extra gas in cans on the roof, feeling very prepared.
